Why did you choose Opthalmology?

Many of you have reached out and asked me- how and why did I choose Ophthalmology?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It is a very specialized field in medicine caring for a very tiny organ. Although a seemingly small scope of medicine there are many reasons why I choose my field.⁣⁣

I’ll share bits over a few posts.⁣⁣

𝘛𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩: For me- variety is the spice of life. Yes, ophthalmology is focused on one part of the body but…⁣⁣

1️⃣ There are several microstructures in the eye. In fact, you can specialize in almost any layer of the eye: cornea, cataract and refractive surgery, glaucoma, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, and oculoplastics (the outside of the eye!)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
2️⃣There are several different ways to treat different conditions in the eye. We can offer medical treatments (i.e. eye drops), in-office procedural treatments (i.e. injections and lasers) and surgical treatments (i.e. cataract surgery)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
3️⃣ Systemic conditions in our body can affect the eye, in fact, your overall health can affect your vision. To name a few: diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, cancer, and autoimmune conditions. Having a good internal medicine fund of knowledge will take you far in Ophtho.⁣⁣
