Many of you have reached out and asked me- how and why did I choose Ophthalmology?
It is a very specialized field in medicine caring for a very tiny organ. Although a seemingly small scope of medicine there are many reasons why I choose my field.
I’ll share bits over a few posts.
𝘛𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩: For me- variety is the spice of life. Yes, ophthalmology is focused on one part of the body but…
1️⃣ There are several microstructures in the eye. In fact, you can specialize in almost any layer of the eye: cornea, cataract and refractive surgery, glaucoma, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, and oculoplastics (the outside of the eye!)
2️⃣There are several different ways to treat different conditions in the eye. We can offer medical treatments (i.e. eye drops), in-office procedural treatments (i.e. injections and lasers) and surgical treatments (i.e. cataract surgery)
3️⃣ Systemic conditions in our body can affect the eye, in fact, your overall health can affect your vision. To name a few: diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, cancer, and autoimmune conditions. Having a good internal medicine fund of knowledge will take you far in Ophtho.
