About Modern Mom MD

Hi. I’m Shanika Esparaz M.D. and welcome to my little home on the web, Modern Mom, MD.

I am a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and Medical Retina specialist. I love educating young adults and my patients about their eye health which is directly connected to our overall health and wellbeing. I believe seeing is our most precious sense.

My parents are from Sri Lanka (a tiny island off the tip of India) making me a first generation American. I grew up in Northeast Ohio.
I married my college sweetheart who is also in medicine as an Interventional Radiologist. We are blessed with two toddler girls and a dog named Agassi.
My goal through Modern Mom, MD and my social media accounts is to educate, inspire, and empower you to lead a healthy and fulfilling life in or outside of medicine.

I love helping young women in medicine, especially those who are learning the delicate balance of medicine and motherhood. As a busy mom of two who is married to a physician, we’ve encountered our share of challenges young physicians face in medicine as well as parenthood.   We have one life to live and my goal is to live it well. It starts with enjoying the simple things in life. Like hearing my daughter’s giggle, the smile on my husband’s face, the sloppy wet kiss from my dog or the hug from a patient whose vision was just saved.

I’ve got big dreams to do more – and I suspect you do too! How do we make the most of the here and now while finding joy and staying healthy? I don’t think I have all the answers, but I hope to keep uncovering them alongside you.

Have a time-out with Modern Mom MD, delivered to your inbox weekly.
